[CCBC-Net] Life changing books

This discussion is bringing out all the lurkers, me included. There have many of my favorites have been mentioned, so I will try not to repeat.

When my art historian mother used to drag me to museums, I used to pester her about the imagery in classical art. She responded by giving me D'AULAIRES' BOOK OF GREEK MYTHS by Ingri & Parin D'Aulaire. My favorite chapter was the one devoted to Athena. The image of her birth from the head of Zeus, fully armed and raising a battle cry, filled by intense need for a strong female icon.

I was lucky enough to have a 5th grade teacher who read us Virginia Hamilton's ZEELY. When we came to the episode where Geeder imagines finding a new color, I remember sitting at my desk and feeling my mind actually bend to accommodate this new idea. I keep thinking about it for weeks, wanting to know what a new color would look like and feeling amazed such ideas could live in books.

Thanks for a great discussion!
