I have just loved reading all these posts about the beloved books of our childhood. When I was a kid, I was a total sucker for a series. I loved finding a wonderful new world and getting to stay with it for more than one book. My top favorite series was the Moomin books. I read them all in second grade and I loved that there were footnotes (how cool) and a map. I still love to open a book and find a map! Also fond of the Baum Oz books, Edward Eager books, Miss Bianca books, the Three Investigator series (they had the coolest clubhouse), Henry Reed books... I can close my eyes and picture where all these books lived in the basement of the Corvallis Public Library in the early 1970's. I remember feeling kind of strange when, instead of going down to the basement, I climbed up the stairs to the YA section and found Paul Zindel. Very happy to report that I handed my copy of The Pigman to my almost 13-year-old just last night. Glad to hear people plugging The Pushcart War. My third grade teacher read it aloud and I try to make every third grade teacher do the same!
