I?m another ?newbie? as of today I don?t think enough can be said about an adult?s influence in introducing children to special books. In my case, it was a third grade teacher who read wonderful books to our class like A Wrinkle in Time and Misty of Chincoteague. Forty years later, I still want to go to Chincoteague Island one day to experience the pony auction. And the power of love in L?Engle?s book is still magical for me. I?m certain that some of the concepts in Wrinkle would have been difficult for me at the age of 8 without an adult guide. When I came back to read the book on my own a few years later, I enjoyed it even more. My sixth grade teacher introduced us to William Shakespeare with such enthusiasm and good humor that I will always remember it as one of the best years I had in school.

More books: Gene Stratton-Porter?s Freckles which introduced me to romance through the character of a gentle one-handed timber guard; Robert Heinlein?s The Door Into Summer which cemented my lifelong love for science fiction; and of course Tolkien?s The Lord of the Rings?I can?t imagine my life without it.
