I am forever indebted to my elementary school librarian, Mae Inkhen, who has had an influence on my entire life. I was a quiet kid and a voracious reader, and this kind librarian always made me feel special. She saved books for me behind her desk, and every week, when my class went to the library, she brought out a stack and said, "Try these and let me know what you think." The books were varied--Charlotte's Web, The Outsiders, The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet, Wuthering Heights, All of a Kind Family, Green Mansions, Jane Eyre--and I didn't always love every one, but Mrs. Inkhen's respect for me and her encouragement of my love of reading made the weekly visits to her class a highlight of my childhood.
So to all of you children's librarians out there: You hold great power to change lives.
