[CCBC-Net] Wonderful books

I can't say that I've had a life-changing book. I probably had a life-changing librarian. In my small town library, built by Andrew Carnegie, the limit was six books for kids. After she got to know me, the children's librarian waived the limit, and I could have as many as I wanted. I would go home with as many as I could carry. I loved all the Jack London books, O Henry short stories, Trixie Belden books, Swiss Family Robinson, Treasures of the Snow, and books by Betty Cavana and Oregon's own Evelyn Lampman.

My parents never censored what I read, so I can remember reading Heinlein and Silverberg in the children's section (boys in space with slide rules), and then going upstairs to the adult section and checking out their books there, a rather mind-bending experience (everybody in bed together).

Reading made many things tolerable, and that in itself was life-changing.
