I too loved Jo in "Little Women," and Anne Shirley (like her, I spell my name with the very important "e").
Like Jo and Anne, Betsy Ray was an aspiring writer, and she has a special place in my heart. I grew up in Minnesota and was just the right age when Maud Hart Lovelace began publishing the high school stories in her
"Betsy-Tacy" series. I wanted to be part of Betsy's family and crowd! Which beau would Betsy choose, my friends and I wondered. I championed Tony, and only later realized that the handsome and smooth young man could just could not be the right choice for her.
Each year we waited for the next book to continue the story, just as Harry Potter fans do today. When I was in seventh grade Maud Hart Lovelace spoke at the St. Paul Public Library, and autographed my copy of "When Betsy Was a Junior." Meeting her was an important moment in my life.
