For my 12th birthday, my dad gave me a copy of The Annotated Alice. I already know the story, but the whole idea of examining a text closely, looking at its relationship to the culture, to the historical context, and to the author was a totally new concept to me and I was fascinated.
Strangely, I never made this connection before, but... in college I majored in cultural anthropology, and did my graduate studies in the social and psychological interpretation of folk narrative. It must have been this edition of Alice in Wonderland that got me started.
