I must add to this discussion a moment from the Rhode Island Children's Book Award ceremony last week. Betty Birney received the 2006 award for The World According to Humphrey. In Rhode Island we have the children create and conduct the ceremony, of course guided by their teachers and school library media specialist. At one point the children in one class said a line that went like this:
The words go from your hands to our ears and will echo down through the years.
All the librarians and teachers eyes teared up, but really the message was for Betty and all authors to remind them of the profound effect books can have on young people. Love this discussion, Melody Melody Allen melody_allen at gw.doa.state.ri.us
