I have to second Lauralyn's pick of the Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes. The book spoke volumes to me about what women could do despite what men might think. (In the 50's this was a pretty big deal!) The other book I remember latching onto and reading and re-reading was Watership Down. It may have provided my first feelings of righteous indignation and it completely changed the way I looked at "progress" in rural, semi-rural, or even suburban areas.
