While there are many books that had a profound impact on me as a child, I would only cite one as life-changing.

"The Secret Language" by Ursula Nordstrom stirred my early interest in language, which led me to major in Linguistics in college. I rediscovered the book near the end of my undergraduate years and the fond memories I had associated with it led me to drop the idea of doctoral studies in Linguistics in favor of attending library school, so I could study children's literature.
To my surprise, I learned that the author of "The Secret Language" had edited nearly every book that has an impact on me as a child, including:

"But Not Billy" by Charlotte Zolotow
"A Hole Is to Dig" by Ruth Kraus
"The Very Nice Things" by Jean Merrill
"The Family Under the Bridge" by Natalie Savage Carlson
"Stuart Little" by E.B. White
"Harriet the Spy" by Louise Fitzhugh
"Berries Goodman" by Emily Cheney Neville
