Once I was old enough to read fairy tales to myself, the big fat book of Grimm's Fairy Tales became a nightly companion. The stories of good, evil, and retribution felt so satisfying. I loved them. "The Wind in the Willows" was another favorite because the characters and their activities seemed so real to me, especially the wonderfully mischievous Mr. Toad. Another old-fashioned favorite were the Princess and the Goblin books by George MacDonald--perhaps because they were also like fairy tales. Also, the Greek myths and Nathaniel Hawthorne's "A Wonder Book" and "Tanglewood Tales." These favorites have reinforced my belief in the importance of fairy tales and fantasy for children, and I try to "sell" them to children and their parents whenever possible. Lolly
