Just one?
Well, there was Little Plum by Rumer Godden. This was the first book I read as a child that the children seemed real. They had a secret life. They were mean to each other. They worked things out. I read it over and over. Also the first intertextual connections. The baby doll was the Peach Boy and you could actually read his story in another book by a different author.
Oh about that- I read Movie Shoes which prominently features The Secret Garden then read The Secret Garden then reread Movie Shoes.
Oh life changing. I discovered the Author. I went to the card catalog of the Cherry Hill Public Library and looked up Ballet. I was sent to the shelves for Ballet Shoes. Read it. Loved it. Brought it back. Found it again. In the same place. Right next to it were other books that I took out. Loved them. At some point had an aha moment. All the books that I loved were right next to each other on the bottom shelf. All the books I loved were written by the same person!!! Oh and the life lesson of the Fossil sisters, that you can do anything in your life, find your passion and not worry about family expectations. And hard work plus some humility will stand you in good stead for all challenges in life.
On to Beverly Cleary. Mitch and Amy- The first book that I read that reflected my life. I had a twin brother. Who was just like Mitch. Also a reference to Pippi Longstocking. Had to go read that. Ah the joyful exuberance of Pippi.
First really scary book- The Wicked Pigeon Ladies in the Garden. Time travel and horror all wrapped in one slim volume.
And in Junior High- Paperback rebound editions of Asimov, Bradbury and Heinlein. I called them hardcover paperbacks. They were displayed in a trough near the entrance of the Media Center and I worked my way through volume after volume of strange, scary and wonderful stories. Thus began the lifelong love affair with science fiction and fantasy.
