The book that changed my life as an adolescent was PICTURES AT A PROSECUTION: DRAWINGS & TEXTS FROM THE CHICAGO CONSPIRACY TRIAL by Jules Feiffer
(published by Grove Press in 1971), which I discovered on the New Arrivals shelf of my public library. In large part because of reading it, I'd find myself by the next spring protesting on the steps of the Capitol listening to Coretta Scott King, Phil Ochs Vance Hartke, and John Kerry.
While it was not published as a YA book, the effect it had upon me reinforces my belief in the significant value of the Alex awards as well as in the value of BBYA's consideration of books published for adults but of significance to teens.
I would certainly recommend it for any American history student today.
