One fantasy series that I've particularly enjoyed is The Hungry City Chronicles by Philip Reeve. Both Mortal Engines and Predator's Gold were wonderfully imagined. That first description of London as a wheeled city pursuing a smaller city is still one of my favorite openings to a novel. I see there is a third book in the series on it's way, Infernal Devices.
One of the things I enjoyed most was that no character was safe in the book.
