I think Patricia McKillip is an excellent adult fantasy author with potential Middle School appeal. They often have elements of folklore and romance, and are extremely well written. The "Riddle Master" trilogy, which has been published as YA and Adult is one of my favorites, but adult-mareketed titles like "Ombria in Shadow" and "Alphabet of Thorn" are intricate, original tales that teens who have enjoyed Robin McKinley or Diana Wynne Jones might appreciate.
