What about the Mary Stewart series on King Arthur beginning with the Crystal Cave, the Hollow Hills, etc., etc., It has been many years since I read them but I think that they would be suitable for middle school and young adults. They are still available in paperback.
I few days ago I found myself making a reference to "Touch Not the Cat" by Mary Stewart when I was talking to a graduate student about the discussion centering around the "Dark is Rising." Touch Not the Cat is an old title and may be out of print.
I have seen seventh graders reading the Robert Jorden "Wheel of Time" series and that is an adult series. I have not read them so can't make a recommendation about their suitability, perhaps somebody else on this list can.
