A few years ago I had several girls who couldn't get enough of the Gothic Fantasy books. One of their favorites was Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause. I suppose that some people would consider it more in the horror genre, but it has so many of the fantasy elements in it as well. Klause is also a writer of science fiction books and I would guess that is the reason why Blood and Chocolate seems like a fantasy novel rather than a horror novel.
I recently read, or rather should say listened to the recorded version of, "The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp." I liked this book very much and thought that the heroes growth and maturation process throughout the story was done very well. This book has lots of action in it that involve fast cars, motorcycles, horses, as well as swords, skullduggery, and a little romance. Everything a fifteen year old would like to read.
I haven't heard much talk about the Redwall books and I found that once kids read one they wanted another. These books especially appeal to fourth and fifth graders. Girls seems to like them better than boys, but there are exceptions to that statement as I had a young cousin, boy, who really liked them. The new series by Jacques "Flying Dutchman" seems to be aimed at a little older audience and I haven't heard kids talking about them at all.
