[CCBC-Net] Middle school Fantasy

I am in the midst of reading and rereading (sometimes listening to) the Dark is Rising series and the Prydain Chronicles. I didn't read either as a child and am a definite lover of Fantasy. I have found I'm enjoying the Alexander books more because of the humor and character development; I can see where Cooper's books might be "boring" to some readers, and I agree it's mostly the lack of humor. They're also rather repetitious in plot. I listened to the all the Cooper books but the last on tape, and I'm finding it's taking me a long time to read it.
One Fantasy I'm listening to right now that I think would appeal to middle school readers is Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. It's action-packed but also very funny. The reading by Jim Dale, who has won awards for his readings of the HP books, is wonderful, too. Several librarians in our system have used it on their booktalk lists to the local schools.
