Are they sophisticated readers? My favorite recent adult fantasy is Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke and I've definitely seen it read by older middle schoolers. Or perhaps Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys? Great fun, it is.
