I agree with Jonathan Hunt (quoted below) - I recently read POISON and was blown away by Chris Wooding's inventiveness in this dark tale for teens. And, it WAS nice to read a stand alone, complete fantasy in these days of trilogies and more.
Other favorites from the last year or so:
TRICKSTER'S CHOICE and TRICKSTER'S QUEEN by Tamora Pierce are a great continuation of her Alanna series, featuring Alanna's feisty daughter. WILL OF THE EMPRESS is another outstanding new title from Pierce, a part of the Circle of Magic books.
MAGYK by Angie Sage created a world I believed in completely and could picture in my mind. The sequel, FLYTE, is now out.
Cornelia Funke's INKHEART and INKSPELL are very popular in my library, and INKSPELL in particular brings up interesting questions about reality, books and story (this is a theme in POISON as well).

POISON is a terrific standalone fantasy with some dark fairy tale elements, while his earlier book, THE HAUNTING OF ALAIZABEL CRAY, with it's Victorian setting and equally clever imagination, is even better. THE STORM THIEF comes out later in the year, and needless to say, I can hardly wait.
