Neil Gaiman is great for lovers of Norse and other mythology. But the novels are scary serious to me and high level. I guess they have the naughty bits too, don't they?
As for Harry, don't you think one of the reasons he appeals so much is that the books are a little lacking in levels, compared to Susan Cooper and some others? Don't get me wrong, I like the books, but they are not as sophisticated as some and therefore more accessible. But generally, most second graders have a hard time reading them to themselves. They do like to carry them back and forth from the library! And some of their parents were willing to take the time to read them to the children.
Long live Harry anyway because of what he has done for our field.
