First of all, now I see why people who get the digest want responders to delete the message they are responding to. I am now getting the digest and am way behind.

Just a thought about definitions. It strikes me that it might be better to discuss the definitions with kids and err on the side of inclusion so that kids can see these distinctions (esp. kids just starting out with fantasy/sci. fi./ etc.) for themselves rather than keep away from certain books because they don't really meet the strict definition of something-or-other.

Kids love to make distinctions so they will make plenty of their own!

I see that DuPrau isn't strictly fantasy, but I just got the books and thought they would be easy enough for some of my ESL (ELL) students and was excited that they might want to read them when they have a hard time reading some titles. The Rowan of Rin books are going over with this group of kids also.
