[CCBC-Net] Classic fantasies

The topic is on new fantasy books, but I will happily jump on Angelica's coattails and add in my own recommendation for Wonderland and Oz. While the children who love fantasy will need little help scarfing up the new work being published, they might need a little help finding and enjoying these classical works of fantasy. I've found Lemony Snicket lovers to especially enjoy the word place and snarkiness of Carroll while Baum appeals to a broader range of young readers today.

As Angelica and some others here know, I read aloud Alice in Wonderland to my 4th graders every year, they do a project, and we end with an Alice in Wonderland tea party. For some years it was a Victorian toy theater project, but this year we are trying something different that I'm quite excited about: an almost-anime Alice, done with a series of photos and voice-over done as small film. Hopefully, like the others it too will be on the web.
(http://intranet.dalton.org/ms/alice/). I also do The Wizard of Oz which the children are currently reading. Soon they will view the MGM movie and compare the two.

I don't like to plug my own books, but for those considering using these books with children and wanting a little help, I have chapters on teaching them in Using Beloved Classics to Deepen Reading Comprehension (Scholastic Professional Books) which was, in the first edition, titled Fantasy Literature in the Elementary Classroom.
