SELECTING AND EVALUATING RECENTLY PUBLISHED CHILDREN'S BOOKS (Grades Pre K-4) TEED505N This course offers the opportunity to examine a wide selection of recently published children's books in order to develop and refine participants' selection criteria. We will identify key developmental themes and discuss how to incorporate them into the language arts class and interdisciplinary studies. Gain an understanding of how children's books are published, reviewed and become selected as award winners such as the Newbery Medal, Bank Street College's Best Books of the Year and American Library Association Notable Children's Books. We will also examine publishing trends such as celebrity books, diversity titles, graphic novels and high-interest reading for boys. New books from the Bank Street Bookstore will be available for review. For librarians, teachers, and reading specialists. Lisa Von Drasek is the Children's Librarian at Bank Street College of Education and serves as the children's literature specialist for children, parents, faculty, and graduate students. She wrote and edited the New York State Summer Reading Manual Discover 2000 Read and, in 1999, was named a Library of Congress American Memory Fellow. She served on the 2003 Newbery Committee and is presently serving on the ALA/ALSC Notable Children's Book Committee. Lisa has reviewed children's books for School Library Journal, Riverbank Review, The New York Times Book Review, and Kirkus. She presently writes a monthly column Teaching with Children's Books in Teaching K-8 and is Nick Jr. Family Magazine's children's book reviewer.July 17 and 18 Monday and Tuesday, 9:30 am - 4 pm No credit $375 / 1 credit $940 Materials fee $10
