John Lennon who said: "We're all Christ and we're all Hitler." John Lennon was a songwriter. A musician. No offense, but I certainly don't think we should aspire to believe, repeat, etc., anything John Lennon said to our children (and I loved his music) as fact or truth, unless in relation to music and or history of music. Certainly not human behavior.
The Holocaust and other genocides have been (are, will be) perpetrated by ordinary people
How you can teach students that Hitler was an ordinary person is beyond me. He was mad, he was tormented, and he was evil. Not ordinary by any means.
and that we are all capable of doing evil. Is this really what we want our children to think? I for one know for a fact that I am NOT capable of doing evil. Making bad choices? Yes. Saying something hurtful?
Yes.
"Doing" EVIL ? Absolutely not. Am I capable of burning and starving and tearing families away from each other? NO. PLEASE speak for yourself.
I do not want to be argumentative, but in this case, I think you should let the books and facts speak for themselves, and possibly keep your personal opinions out of the classroom. Respectfully, Emma librarian and mother
