I have not read NUMBER THE STARS in many years, yet many of the images remain vivid in my mind. I remember distinctly how the first time a Nazi soldier is described by the girls, it is from the boots up- the huge boots being what they first see. It was an absolutely chilling image, and perfectly in keeping with a child's eye view of the world.
