I agree with Ruth Gordon it is difficult for me to read literature that makes the Holocaust a 'fable' or think of concentration camps as picnic grounds. That said I wonder why the Painted Bird by Kosinski hasn't come up for secondary level reading. Additionally one of the most forceful books I've read about the experience of children in the Holocaust is The soldier with the golden buttons by Miriam Steiner- Aviezer (Yad VaShem 1987). The writing is simple and straightforward but the subject matter is horrific. The combination of simplicity and horror gives a the book an overall tone that could reflect a child might have processed what was happening.
