My favorite two Holocaust-related books are both by Jane Yolen: /The Devil's Arithmetic/ (children) and /Briar Rose/ (young adult/adult).
Aside from Jane Yolen's outstanding lyrical and story-building skills, I like these best because they first place the reader within a family, and then stretch back to that family's experience. This reflects how most of us experience the Holocaust, re-membering the past through the stories of our elders, and enables young readers to frame the story in a current context rather than abstracting the material.
