I'd almost forgotten to include this essential Canadian book!
Hana's Suitcase by Karen Levine It was originally published in Canada by Second Story Press http://www.secondstorypress.on.ca/books/hanasuitcase.html
And in the US t by Albert Whitman ( 2003) ISBN 0807531480
It is a deceptively simple and moving biography of a Czech girl who died in the Holocaust, told in alternating chapters. It recounts how Fumiko Ishioka, the curator of a Japanese Holocaust Education center, requested an historic object for her students to use in their studies. Hana's suitcase was sent to her and her students, and they became determined to know more about this child, the original owner of the suitcase. Fumiko's search brought her to Toronto, Canada, and to George Brady, Hana's older brother. It was the winner of The National Jewish Book Award (USA), The Association of Jewish Libraries' Sydney Taylor Award (Older Readers),The Ontario Library Association's Silver Birch Award, The Ontario Library Association's Golden Oak Award, The Canadian Jewish Book Award and the 2003 Canadian Information Book Award. It was also the subject of a CBC Documentary: "Hana's Suitcase" One can still listen to the documentary: http://radio.cbc.ca/programs/thismorning/sites/people/hanassuitcase_010119/h ana_main.html The family has also made a web site about Hana http://www.hanassuitcase.ca/
And a play was recently produced at a children's theatre in Toronto http://www.lktyp.ca/en/current/hana.cfm
Please take the time to listen to the documentary.
