Years ago when Spiegelman's MAUS was new, I took it to a 9th grade class in the Bronx to booktalk. Most of the students spoke good English but came from immigrant families. After the booktalk, one girl bravely raised her hand and said, "But that's not real." Others nodded. I thought at first that she was confused by the graphic novel nature of the work, but she made it clear that she understood and was horrified that people had been killed. The teacher and I looked at each other and changed the lesson of the day to try to explain WWII and answer many questions. These students, mostly Hispanic, had never learned anything about the Holocaust. It is important for students to learn about the past but when and how? The discussion has been very interesting.
