RHYME VERSES RAP: POETRY FOR KIDS A Preconference, sponsored by the CLA Children?s and Young Adult Sections Monday, May 8, 2006
Program Description:
At this preconference, you will meet three innovative poets whose works have lots of kid appeal: Paul B. Janeczko, Patricia Hubbell, and Charles R. Smith Jr. After their formal presentations, they will provide mini-workshops so you can gain further insights to each person?s unique style and develop your own poetic muse. There will also be time for you to share your own methods for turning kids of all ages on to poetry. Bring your pencil, paper, and creative ideas to this exciting program!

Paul B. Janeczko ? Musings of a Poetry Junkie
Paul B. Janeczko has edited several acclaimed poetry anthologies and books about writing poetry for young readers. His recent work, A Kick in the Head, brings to life the challenging rules of poetry in a whimsical and engaging way. Of special interest to Connecticut residents is Worlds Afire, his compelling novel-in-poetry about the 1944 Hartford circus fire. Paul will start off the day by sharing wi th us the possibilities of poetry - in form, language, images, structure, rhythm, voice, sound, and feeling.
Patricia Hubbell ? Poem Like a Garden
A life-long resident of Easton, CT, Pat sees ideas for poems everywhere; you just have to listen and watch for them. Nature, animals, and everyday life offer endless inspiration for her collections of poems such as Rabbit Moon and Black Earth, Gold Sun. Young children enjoy her rhymed picture books, including Pots and Pans. Pat will talk about how she grows her poems like a garden, and how her career grew from word sounds in her head to published books.
Charles R. Smith - Poetry Set to a Beat
Award-winning author and poet Charles R. Smith Jr. blends rhythm and poetry to stimulate the mind, and enhances these images with his expressive photographs. Young children see themselves in books such as Brown Sugar Babies and I Am America, while the sports-themed rap poems in Hoop Kings and Rimshots appeal to even the most hard-to-reach kids. Charles promises to ?blow the dust off poetry? and leave participants motivated and inspired.
