Actually, Ed, it was my comment...so I'll just say that the statement stands on its own and it is my opinion. I certainly did not advocate that parents permeate every aspect of their child's intellectual life. What I meant was that each parent decides what to teach in his/her own home. That includes checking out materials from the library or purchasing them at the bookstore.
I can't speak to parental interference in classrooms.

Regarding the comment from Maia: "It is up to each parent to decide how and when to disseminate information."
If that point of view is to prevail, then I have to ask where that leaves librarians and teachers? Are parents to dictate what information is to be disseminated to their children outside of the home? There are some parents trying to do that now with public schools and I have to say it is not a pretty picture.
