Carl Sandburg's poems, songs and poetic Rutabaga stories are brought alive wonderfully by Angela Lloyd, Bill Harley and Carol Birch (all terrific storytellers) on the recording Sandburg Out Loud.

I have heard this and I agree! I highly recommend it.
Also, I think Billy Collins has poetry on audio now, but for adults of course. Again, it seems there is plenty of wonderful audios for adult poetry; not so for children's poetry.
And I agree with Lee Bennett Hopkins that publishers might change their attitudes if they heard more from potential buyers; teachers and librarians. So we should all make our voices heard.
But even if poetry can't be heard, the power of reading is huge. Reading aloud OR silently. Poems have changed my life, and some of my students, too. I believe this.
By the way, Mr. Hopkins has a poetry anthology that has just recently won a huge award; I believe it was a collection of poems titled "Where are My Pants?" Or something like that -- about everyday disasters that all kids go through. But I can't remember the award; hope he will chime with this information.
Poetry anthologies are so great for the classroom. I have my students go thru and find their favorites. I usually put out a dozen or so (some of my favorites are those OF Mr. Hopkins; "Days To Celebrate," and 'Wonderful Words," among others, and Prelutsky's "20th Century Poetry Treasury" and X.J.Kennedy's
"Talking Like the Rain." Have them put post-it notes on their favorites, and share them. Have them then copy their favorites poems into their own poem journal.
Also, have students make their own anthologies, selecting different poems that students write to go into different categories or headings.
I think we are lucky to have such a treasure of poetry books and contemporary poets available to us today. We should all support them and buy more poetry books!
