How have we celebrated National Poetry Month in Abilene, Texas? By having Naomi Shihab Nye in town for three days, working with high school students as well as one group of middle school children. Results? None of us will ever be the same after we heard her sing songs that she wrote (and play the guitar), read poetry and prose, and teach us how to open up and write.
>From the time she was a child, Naomi says that she wanted to be a "bringer," such as the man who drove the vegetable truck into her neighborhood, the driver of the ice cream truck, and the postal delivery person. She is a "bringer" of the first order. (See her 2005 Greenwillow book _A Maze Me: Poems for Girls_, and find "Ringing" on pages 14-15.) Becky McDonald
