Re: Monica's suggested POETRY SPEAKS TO CHILDREN:
I, too, thought the CD was admirable.
But -- I cannot recommend a book that has a double-page spread (pages 24-25) that has a poem called "Gas" by C. K. Williams whoever he is, about FARTING being forbidden in France...that goes on and on about everyone farting and including a horrid illustrations of a child blowing fart bubbles in an outdoor lawn pool with other children holding their noses and another showing a symphony conductor "tooting" air from his tuxedo! A note says "the poet wrote "Gas" for his grandchildren. One wonder what he must give them as Christmas presents?
What was the editor(s) thinking here?
Again, I prefer a poem about the beauty of flowers over a poem about...
(I detest even using the word!)
Let us, as caring adults, scrutinize every page in every book. And...let's pass beautiful poetry rather than ...
