Once again I seem to beating a dead verse or horse.

Poetry should create its own images in the mind's eye. Why deprive the listener of picture making? But I have said this before and, alas, will say it again.

Mother Goose Rhymes are probably the first poetry children hear after songs sung by adoring adults when the babies are in cribs or on laps. Mother G. really wants illustrations because so many of the concepts are so foreign (and becoming increasingly so).

But does a line like,

"The sea is calm tonight..." need anything but the euphony of the words.

Too many books of so-called poesy are "saved" by illustrators. Maybe we should concentrate on words more attentively instead of the preci'ous slushy "word pieces". Dreck is not made into gold by illustration and there is a good deal of dreck being published.
