One of the strongest elements of "Tequilla Worm" is the idea that one can go from one society to the other but maintain the family heritage. She has no "shame" in her background, only love and affection in her journey from the barrio to the wider world.
It's a good thing to remember these days when the immigration situation is on every front page.
