[CCBC-Net] Belpre narrative award

I read "Tequila Worm", which I found easily in the Milwaukee County Federated Library System. I don't remember how many copies were already owned or in which specific libraries. I thought it was a wonderful novel. It seems somewhat autobiographical from the author bio available. I think it's a book that librarians and teachers will love because the main character is striving to get an education, but doesn't want to leave her extended family/barrio/community behind. It's well written and to someone who doesn't even remotely know the Texas borderlands wonderfully evocative.

I've really liked the previous 2 Belpre narrative award winners--Julia Alvarez's "Before We Were Free" in 2004 and Pam Munoz Ryan's "Esperanza Rising" in 2002. I was glad to see Ryan's "Becoming Naomi Leon" honored this year also. I loved the carvings in that book and how Naomi found her Mexican family and also resolved her feelings for her long-absent mother.

Has anyone read this year's narrative winner "Tequila Worm"? I have not and did not have access to it for our discussion. I'd be curious to hear thoughts on the book and whether you have it in your collection. I wonder if it will become as widely read/the author as well known as the two previous winners I mentioned above... It's more of a teen selection than the recent past winners had been.

Thanks for any thoughts you can share! Julie Ranelli
