Last year I read "Seeing Emily" by Joyce Lee Wong written in a loose verse format. Really beautiful writing and a story I think many kids will relate to, probably for the upper-end of your age group range. Themes that touch on typical teen angst and joys, family relations, racism, finding where one fits in life.
