Hi, all
Am I getting in under the wire for the CSK AWard Book?
It was so refreshing to see Tonya Bolden's title (Maritcha) given recognition. No one ever forget the tragedy and heart break of slavery, but it is like a relief from sorrow to read of a middle class black family that was so well educated and so dedicated to helping others get an education. What impeccable research had to be done to write this readable text and scrutinize carefully each phtograph.
Jamie Adoff has not lost his "hard metal" touch, but he certainly has demonstrated his ability to write with sensitivity and fluidity.
I can never look at a book illustrated by Gregory Christie without remembering what he said about his approach. I mentioned one time that there seemed to be such an emphasis on the HEAD of each of his characters. His quiet response was," That's where the mind is"
Congratulations to the committee. I could go on and on about Marilyn Nelson, but that can wait for another time.
