Hi, CCBC-Net Book Buyers and Library Users -
It's book buyers who are absolutely most likely to notice an award seal on a children's book - or an adult book, for that matter - and most library users of all ages, too.
Publishers tell us it's extremely expensive to "sticker the stock" already stored in a warehouse. This is one reason why so many award and honor books are sold without seals. Some publishers are able to finance and administer putting seals on warehoused books recently honored - and that certainly depends upon their sense of the honor's significance for future sales. Some publishers are so organized that when an honored book is reprinted, seals have been purchased in advance, and the step of affixing seals onto book jackets is already set within the mix of all other tasks needing attention while the book is on its way to being warehoused or shipped.
Some publishers of paperback editions of previously honored books are vigilant about reproducing the image of an award seal on the book, or announcing the honor on the back of the pbk edition.
Anyone may purchase book award seals - organizations, businesses and individuals. It's possible to get a supply of all award seals, so that your library system or school district can affix the seals to the books as they arrive. However, most systems and districts buy pre-cataloged, processed books from vendors, so that it's the vendors who need to be vigilant, if their customers care about getting books with seals.
As you can see, it's never simple.
To purchase seals, go to the website of the organization giving the award. 1. For the CSK, Sibert, Geisel, Belpre, Batchelder, Newbery and Caldecott Award & Honor Book seals, go to ALA Graphics.

For the Jane Addams Award & Honor Book go to the Jane Addams Peace Association website. http://www.janeaddamspeace.org/index.asp 3. For Charlotte Zolotow Award seals, go to the CCBC website. http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/friends/forsale.asp
Send an e-mail message of inquiry if you need additional information about quantities, etc., from any of these sites.
As I understand it, one contradiction to all of the above is the National Book Award process where the publishers of nominated books are required to buy and sticker their stock of the nominees. Prior to the announcement of NBA nominees, publishers have submitted certain books for consideration in each category, paying an entry fee for each entry.

I'm sure there are other contradictions to what I outlined for specific children's book awards/honors. However, now let's follow Megan's suggestion and seize the opportunity to examine the books honored by the 2006 Coretta Scott King Award process.
  Cordially, Ginny

I don't know about the Jane Addams Award seals, but when one of my books won a Parents' Choice Award, I was told by the publisher that it wasn't "cost effective" for them to hire someone to affix the seals to the books in the warehouse. Valiska Gregory http://www.valiskagregory.com
