Yes. Children are attracted to the idealism of patriotism which becomes especially fascinating when manipulated by the government or other forces. My own husband, an eastern European emigrant, is old enough to remember the H Youth's uniforms and shining shoes. They were, to other children, highly cool.
On this side of the ocean among some German immigrant groups at least, German uniforms were a threat. e.g., Germans who came to the U.S. via Russia. My dad used the name Hitler like a swear word. Sharon Chmielarz
