Before we move on to another topic, here's one more message about
"Nicholas."
  I've never had the opportunity to study French, so it's intriguing to discover from Robin and Karen that "Le Petit Nicholas" has been and perhaps still is part of a French language study curriculum. We've also learned from Edie that the English language edition of "Nicholas" is popular with 4th - 8th grade boys in her school.
  Last Friday my friend Ronnie wrote to a listserv of French teachers of English in the Dijon [France] school district. This morning she translated the response she's received and sent it to me. Here it is, FYI: ...from an official at the Center for Language Resources based on the University of Burgundy campus. Loose translation: "Personally, I like Little Nicholas a lot (the original, not Sarkozy [controversial French politician/government minister whose first name is...]). I just suggested it to my seven year old daughter who reads a lot and who loves Goscinny (Asterix) but she hasn't grabbed on to it. I have to say that Goscinny is dead and his books are a bit dated already. My eldest daughter who is 18 likes [him] a lot. These books are still much appreciated and are a well known reference/touchstone. I basically agree about the nostalgia side, that parent-child relationships and school have evolved considerably. Finally, perhaps it's more a book for adults than children?"
  A voice from France... and today is International Women's Day.
