I found An Innocent Soldier to be a memorable book. While I haven't used it with young people, I think the first chapter would make a terrific booktalk: Adam hoping that the farmer is taking him to town because it's his birthday, maybe even to adopt him. Instead, the farmer substitutes the underage Adam for his own son who has been requisitioned as a soldier. I agree with Hollis that Adam doesn't really understand much about the reasons for the war or why he is fighting. While the book is frank about the horrors of war, it doesn't go into gruesome detail, making it (I think) even more powerful than if it had. For instance, when Adam asks his friend Konrad Klara why the nuns are crying alongside the road, Klara explains that they have been raped. "So this is war?" Adam asks. "This is war," replies Klara.
