I agree with the comments that this year's awards showcase a great diversity in young adult literature, although I haven't had a chance yet to read
"Black Juice" or "A Wreath for Emmett Till" (adding them to my long list...)
I thought "Looking for Alaska" was really funny, moving and original, although I questioned some of the scenes later. For example, the famous oral sex scene struck me as very funny and edgy when I read it but upon reflection I was disappointed with it because it seemed so unrealistic. My complaints about the book are minor, though. I loved the characters and Miles' voice.
I really enjoyed "I Am The Messenger"?agree with the comments about it here, but was very disappointed in the ending. I still don't get it. The big thing that is revealed seemed so obvious through the whole story. Is there something I'm missing? I loved the rest of the story and haven't read the Zuzak's latest novel, "The Book Thief," to be released in March (I believe), but I've heard nothing but raves about it.
I thought Elizabeth Partridge's Lennon biography was amazing. Since I was a kid I've read tons about the Beatles and she uncovered new information and photos and presented it all in such a compelling way. It's the most well-rounded portrait of Lennon I've seen, highlighting not just his genius and peace activism but his very serious personal shortcomings as well.
Like Paul, I would have liked to have seen Cecil Castelucci's "Boy Proof" among the honorees. I also have to say that I think "A Room on Lorelie Street" by Mary E. Pearson was the best young adult novel I've read in ages. It's such a harrowing, haunting, beautifully written and ultimately hopeful story. I was really hoping that it would win.
I'm eager to hear from others!
