Though I enjoyed "I Am the Messenger" and "Looking for Alaska" as much better than average teenage boy stories, I was especially impressed by "Black Juice," a book I probably would have missed without the Printz recognition. Weeks after reading, just the thought of that tar pit or the accordion or clowns bring me straight back into those vivid worlds she created in the stories. That first story, especially, was amazing...I had to read it twice. She brings us right into that horrifying scene, so far in that she doesn't really let you judge or analyze that society from a distance...you just see it completely through the eyes of the narrator. This will be a challenge for some teens (and adults) to read, but I hope the Printz Honor means it will reach far more of those just-right readers than it would have otherwise.
