I appreciated the elements of mystery and suspense in several of this year's Printz books. In Looking for Alaska, I wondered about the reason for the "Before" chapter headings, and then wondered, along with Miles and his friends, about the true reason behind Alaska's death. The question of who sent Ed Kennedy the cards propelled me through I am the Messenger (along with the question of whether Audrey would finally figure out how great Ed was). And Black Juice...every story in that book was a short mystery to me: I found myself asking constantly, "Where am I? What kind of a world is this, and what is going on?" I think all three authors used this device very successfully to build the kind of tension that keeps readers going late into the night.
