[CCBC-Net] Printz Awards

I really enjoyed Marcus Zusak's I am the Messenger. I thought that the narrative voice of teenage cab driver Ed Kennedy was compelling, convincing and appealing. Even though Ed is struggling to be somebody, he is frank, funny, self-deprecating and a loyal friend throughout the story. The pithy, staccato dialogue between Ed and his pals starts during the bank robbery in the first chapter and barely lets up. On the other hand, the story is also serious as Ed has to deliver messages that are sometimes difficult to hear and even violent (as with an abusive husband).

>What a great range of excellent books selected by the Printz committee!
>A superb novel as the medal-winner and another fine novel as an Honor,
>one of the best poetry works for older readers to come along in a long
>time, Elizabeth Partridge's outstanding biography, and a strong
>collection of short stories. All are works I would hope to see older
>kids reading, and in my dream world high school teachers would be
>familiar with such great YA literature and use it in their teaching.
>I'll comment on individual works later, but I thought it was the RANGE
>that was so remarkable this year.
