Criss Cross was one of our Newbery Contender books. Our contender project spans 4th and 5th grades. (Next year this will most likely change since the past two years the winner has been geared toward older children.) There were six children who read the book and only two stuck it out and finished it. Both the reviews these students wrote were not favorable. I can still hear one fifth grade girl telling me there was nothing happening. It was just too much book for her. Since the announcement there has been renewed interest in the title, but the word of its greatness is not spreading from child to child at our school. I read and enjoyed the book (after it won), but I am always more interested in what the students have to say. Laura Lane
