I haven't read Criss Cross yet but I was a teenager in the 1970's who did data entry as a summer job! Not sure of the particulars in the book but it certainly was a possibility. It bore NO resemblance to today's desktop computing but it was definitely data entry. I worked for a national office of a major religious denomination and girls sat at keyboards typing statistics onto large pieces of paper which were then sent off somewhere else to be optically scanned and put on a large reel of magnetic tape to be read by a mainframe computer.
